ABOUT TOM BAUM
I have spent the last 40 years dedicated to the study of the tourism and hospitality workforce as researcher, teacher and consultant. My PhD was in the area of tourism labour markets and I completed a second doctorate (DLitt) in order to bring together my key publications in this volume, with a narrative that identifies the progressive development of my thinking since the first was published in 1987. My work has a strong international and comparative focus, recognising the impact of culture, politics and socio-economic context on work and employment.I am committed to utilising my research as the basis for intellectual activism that advocates for change and improvement in the working lives of employees in frontline services.I have worked in some 45 countries and provide policy-informing advice to governments, international agencies (UN and others) and the private sector on a range of matters that relate to the above domain.
