ABOUT CHRISTOPHER DORMAN
I\'ve spent over 20 years building and running laser businesses at Coherent Corp, one of the world\'s largest photonics companies. Today I lead the global Lasers Business — products spanning precision manufacturing, semiconductors, display, life sciences and scientific instrumentation.I\'m a physicist by background, with a doctorate in quantum physics and nonlinear optics from Imperial College, and the science has stayed with me throughout. Femtosecond lasers, attosecond physics, quantum optics — this is genuinely one of the most extraordinary fields in applied physics, and it\'s still underappreciated outside the industry.For over a decade I chaired the UK Photonics Leadership Group and Photonics Scotland, making the case that photonics deserves to sit alongside semiconductors and aerospace in how the UK thinks about strategic technology. I\'m a Visiting Professor at the University of Strathclyde and a Fellow of the Institute of Physics.In 2019 I received an OBE for services to laser and photonic technology and exports. In 2024 the Institute of Physics awarded me the Katharine Burr Blodgett Gold Medal for contributions to physics in industry — an honour I\'m proud of, not least because it reflects the work of a lot of talented people over a long time.
