Timothy McCormally joined the IRS Office of Professional Responsibility as Special Counsel in February 2021, served as Acting Director from September 2022 to April 2023, and ended his federal service at the end of February 2024. Before joining the IRS, Timothy was a director in the Washington National Tax practice of KPMG US, working primarily with its Practice, Procedure & Administration group. He previously served first as General Counsel and then Executive Director of Tax Executives Institute, a nonprofit association of in-house tax professionals. For nearly three decades while at TEI, I was editor of The Tax Executive magazine, wrote a regular column about taxes and association matters for 11 years, and oversaw the business, financial, and editorial aspects of the publication and of TEI itself. Timothy received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa and his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center. He is a frequent speaker on topics of tax ethics and professionalism, and writes about IRS programs and procedures in publications such as Tax Adviser, Tax Notes, and Bloomberg BNA’s Daily Tax Report. Timothy has published a book of poetry, and served four years on the Internal Revenue Service Advisory Counsel, including one as Chair of the group. Timothy is a proud supporter and former member of the board of directors of the Greater DC Diaper Bank.
