ABOUT THOMAS SAMIS
I am a leader who loves to create value in group settings through problem solving and creativity. I pride myself as a person who takes initiative in my work and academic settings.I am currently a UBC DAP student with a background in hospitality and service management. My value as a leader is connected to my ability to take the initiative within a team. An example would be my volunteer work at the Commerce Student Society as a Director of Charity Events in the Community Outreach Portfolio. Instead of recycling old ideas from last year, I took the creative liberty to design an online indigenous cooking class from the ground up and was awarded the Best Wellness Initiative in 2021 by the Canadian Association of Business Students. I found that my different co-op experiences, despite being so different, meld together well to help me with problem solving skills. Regardless of the environment I found myself in I always tried to find creative ways to solve problems. When working as a sales rep in the tech industry I found unique solutions in researching different potential clients to close. I enjoyed the process of scanning a company for their strengths and weaknesses which would inform how I should approach their decision makers. When I started working at the Inn at Laurel Point I developed a strong passion for sustainability which led to me being the youngest member of the Sustainability INNitiative Board at the hotel. I used my position to gather the necessary data from the hotel to test my sustainable ideas. When the position opened up I took the initiative to join the night audit team at the hotel as a way to provide value to my team and operate at the hotel from a different perspective than the front desk. Working at a tech startup exposed me to research tools, CRMs, R&D, marketing tools, and sales training. In contrast, working at a hotel refined my ability to connect with people, service IQ, accounting, data collection, and sustainability. Together these aspects of each position combined to give me the skills to pursue a career in consulting with a focus on sustainability.
