ABOUT SYDNEY SWEDICK
I build bridges between science and impact! At twelve years old, I underwent spinal fusion surgery, which involved the placement of titanium rods and screws along the full length of my spine. This experience instilled in me a profound appreciation for, and drive to advance, healthcare through cutting-edge science. In my pursuit to understand how innovation truly reaches people — and why much science remains stuck at the bench — I have explored science from every angle: founding my own startup, working at early-stage ventures, contributing to prestigious research institutions including Harvard Medical School, Johns Hopkins University, Rice University, Houston Methodist, the University of Cambridge, and the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering, and engaging in consultancy and venture capital.Beyond the lab, I am committed to connecting underserved communities with top institutions. As a first-generation, low-income woman in STEM from a rural town where most students do not attend college, I began by graduating high school early and attending community college. Now, as a Gates Scholar and recipient of multiple national and international awards, I mentor underrepresented students, lead scholarship funds, and build ventures rooted in social impact. My ultimate goal is to make a tangible difference through my science and engineering background in healthcare, biotech, and deep tech, getting research out of labs and into the hands of the people. Whether through building, investing, or policymaking, I aim to be a bridge between science, industry, and underserved communities.
