ABOUT SUSAN MARX

I recently joined CIVICUS as Chief Programmes Officer, where I will join the team to steward our global efforts to strengthen civil society, defend civic freedoms, and support the courageous human rights defenders, women leaders, youth activists, and environmental justice advocates shaping a fairer and more sustainable world. I am honored to support an extraordinary team working across democracy, human rights, climate justice, and resilient local movements—ensuring our global network has the support and solidarity it needs to thrive in an increasingly restrictive civic environment. Before stepping into this role, I directed The Carter Center’s Human Rights Program, where I focused on advancing the rights of protected groups, stewarding our work in climate justice, reimagining human rights in a US context, and advancing peace in Palestine-Israel. I helped grow global partnerships, secure significant donor investments, lead strategic convenings from Atlanta to the South Africa, DRC and Brazil, to elevate cross-movement solutions to violence against women, racial injustice, and environmental harm.My earlier work with the American Bar Association centered on advancing women’s economic rights and combatting human trafficking in sub-Saharan Africa.Across all roles, I’ve been driven by a simple belief: when people—especially women and frontline communities—have the space, safety, and resources to lead, whole societies change for the better.
