ABOUT STEPHEN DAVIS
I\'ve been working in the visual effects industry for over 15 years with the majority of the time spent in Roto Paint. I\'ve had the opportunity to work in some of the top visual effects studios, contributing to some incredible projects with incredible talent. I’ve dipped my toes into compositing during my career but I’ve always navigated back to Roto Paint. Leading and supervision was always an obvious career direction but it has also been an enjoyment of mine. I’ve been fortunate enough to lead some incredible projects and teams over the years at MPC, Scanline, and Digital Domain. As a Supervisor at Scanline I took more responsibilities to drive the department forwards and develop a strong pipeline and team. As the studio grew, so did the department, and I took a larger role supervising artists and leads but also overseeing all projects for creative and technical decisions and challenges. With more work passing through the department it was crucial the pipeline and our workflows met the requirements to handle the volume and deliver projects on time. Over time I worked with production, pipeline and our 3rd party providers to develop tools, processes and relationships to withstand the demands, and deliver work efficiently and to a high standard. Training and mentoring has been a rewarding and enjoyable aspect of my career. Over the time at Scanline I began developing a training process for new and current talent and also built a workflow and training process for leads and supervisors. I had the chance at MPC and Scanline to mentor students from Lost Boys that required an entry level training program to build additional skills and integrate them into the department for the first time. Most recently I’ve taken some opportunities to broaden my skillset and experience working at Digital Domain, ILM and Distillery VFX. Photography has become one of my life’s passions, in particular landscape and wildlife photography that I continue to develop, learn and perfect. Before my move to Vancouver I spent some time as a portrait and wedding photographer that gave me some valuable skills in both photography and running a business that has provided me with various skills that have assisted me as a lead and supervisor in VFX.
