ABOUT STEVE CROFT

Astronomer / astrophysicist / educator, specializing in the search for intelligent life beyond Earth. Project Scientist for the Breakthrough Listen Initiative. Primarily based at the University of California, Berkeley, with joint affiliations at the University of Oxford and at the SETI Institute. I direct the undergraduate research program at UC Berkeley\'s SETI Research Center; our over 140 program alumni are working at some of the top academic institutions and tech companies. I have also personally supervised dozens of students, am the author of over 100 refereed academic papers, and am skilled in the analysis of petabyte-scale astronomical datasets. I am responsible for Listen\'s multi-million-dollar program on the world\'s largest steerable radio telescope. My research interests also involve the study of supermassive black holes and their environments, and time-domain phenomena and anomaly detection in astrophysics.I am enthusiastic about communicating astronomy to the general public (including as an invited speaker on Lindblad National Geographic Expeditions and Swan Hellenic cruises, and in the Silicon Valley Astronomy Astronomy Lecture Series), to technical audiences (including as a guest lecturer at the International Space University) and expanding educational access and equity. I have been interviewed by numerous media outlets (The Observer, The Economist, space.com, Science Channel, etc.) and have written press releases and popular science articles for public audiences.
