FEMA is responsible for coordinating government-wide emergency relief and response efforts during natural disasters and other catastrophes. FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute (EMI) is the national focal point for emergency management training. EMI provides training to strengthen the skills and expertise of emergency managers, first responders, elected officials, and other emergency management officials.FEMA requires that EMI PIO instructors have a “…demonstrated history of working in the public safety field and communications industry [with] experience in Crisis Management, Government, PIO Instruction, public speaking and Emergency Management.”As an adjunct instructor, I deliver in-person and virtual crisis and emergency communications training ranging from basic to master level education and coaching. This includes providing tutoring and counseling, preparing course materials and exercises, administering exams, reviewing papers required for the Master PIO program, and researching current communication and emergency preparedness issues.
