ABOUT SAMUEL MOTLEY

In spring 2019, I graduated from the University of British Columbia with a bachelor\'s in political science. While at UBC, I had the fortune of exploring themes, such as disputes in the current system of humanitarian aid. As a minor, I studied German. Intersecting between my passions for writing and politics, I started an internship at the newspaper, the Salisbury Post, after finishing my coursework at UBC in December 2019. The role gave me experience writing complex narratives in easy-to-follow, journalistic formats while ensuring that the gist of each story was accurately captured. The hard work from the internship paid off. In May 2019, I started working for the Salisbury Post as the Interim Reporter for Government and Business. The position gave me a deeper understanding of the governments of Rowan County, the town of China Grove and local governments more broadly. Once my contract as an Interim Reporter ended, the Salisbury Post allowed me to continue working for them as a freelancer the month (August) before I moved to Munich. Now, I am pursuing a master\'s in political science at the Geschwister-Scholl-Institut für Politikwissenschaft, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (University of Munich or LMU Munich). This will inherently build off of my bachelor’s in political science as I explore complexities in the theory of democracy and current contentions with the concept of the nation-state. My time at UBC, the Salisbury Post, and LMU as well as the other positions referenced below in my profile, such as my time as Research Assistant for Bavarian Research Alliance, play into my larger passions for journalism, languages, political analyses and international relations. These are skills I continuously sharpen as I work towards my long-term goal of becoming a U.S. Foreign Service Officer.
