ABOUT ROBERT GOURDIE
Rob Gourdie is Heywood Fralin Professor and Director at the Center for Vascular and Heart Research at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute (FBRI) at Virginia Tech Carilion. He is a holder of an R35 outstanding investigator award from the National Institute of Health. He is an elected fellow of the American Institute of Medical and BIological Engineers and the American Heart Association and an elected senior member of the National Academy of Inventors. Gourdie co-founded FirstString Research Inc - now a $120m+ clinical stage biotech company and winner of the Tibbet\'s prize from the US Small Buiness Administration. In 2018 he founded \"The Tiny Cargo Company\" to translate a milk exosome technology developed by his Virginia Tech lab. He has authored 200+ publications (H=67) on heart development and electrical function, wound healing and cancer. His research is on the connexins- proteins key to communication between cells. This includes studies on basic mechanisms of cardiac bioelectricity, drug discovery and translational studies of drugs targeting connexins. Gourdie received his PhD(1990) on biophysical properties of keratin from the University of Canterbury (New Zealand). His post-doc training at University College London as a British Heart Foundation Fellow was on connexins in the heart. Prior to joining Tech, Gourdie was Professor at MUSC in Charleston,SC from 1995 to 2012.
