ABOUT CHRIS RANDALL
I am Associate Professor of Microbiology and Interim Pro-Dean for Student Education at the University of Leeds, where I provide strategic leadership for education across the Faculty of Biological Sciences. This includes oversight of portfolio development, quality assurance and enhancement, and student success for approximately undergraduate and 240 taught postgraduate students across three schools. I chair the Faculty Taught Student Education Committee and represent the Faculty on the University\'s Taught Student Education Board.I took on the Pro-Dean role in November 2025, having previously been Director of Student Education for the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology, where I led the school\'s curriculum enhancement work as part of the university\'s Curriculum Redefined initiative.Outside of Leeds, I am an external examiner for programmes at the Universities of Manchester, Dundee and Sheffield. I was previously Editor of Microbiology Today, the membership magazine of the Microbiology Society, and a member of the Society\'s Communications Committee.I have been recognised for teaching innovation at national, institutional and faculty level. In 2025, I was part of the team that received a Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence from Advance HE for the MSc in Biopharmaceutical Development, developed in partnership with industry. I have also received the University of Leeds Teaching Award for Sustained Collaborative Excellence and the Leeds Partnership Award for Inspirational Teaching, along with 11 faculty-level teaching awards over a nine-year period.My teaching focuses on medical bacteriology and molecular biology techniques. I also have research interests in antimicrobial drug discovery and resistance mechanisms.
