ABOUT RAFAL NIEMOJEWSKI

Dr Rafal Niemojewski is a cultural producer and scholar of contemporary art and its institutions. He graduated in History of Art and Curatorial Studies from La Sorbonne and earned his doctorate from the Royal College of Art for his thesis on the proliferation of the contemporary biennial. Niemojewski has worked in the capacities of Assistant and Associate Professor at Central Saint Martins, Sotheby’s Institute, Royal Institute of Art (Stockholm), and MA Programme Director at Chelsea College of Art and Design in London. His writings appeared in numerous journals and books, including The Manifesta Decade (MIT Press, 2006), Biennial Reader (Hatje Cantz, 2010) and The New Curator (Laurence King, 2016). His latest book Biennials: The Exhibitions We Love to Hate (Lund Humphries, 2021) examines essentially contested concepts within the epistemology of contemporary biennials.Outside academia, he has led projects for dOCUMENTA(13), Venice Biennale, Manifesta, Serpentine Galleries, Bergen Kunsthall, and worked as programs curator at the Hayward Gallery, Southbank Centre.In 2014, he was appointed as Expert at the Education, Culture, and Audiovisual Executive Agency (EACEA) at the European Commission, and in 2016 became Director of the Biennial Foundation, a non-profit organization providing advocacy and thought leadership for the international arts community. Outside the United States and Europe, Niemojewski has been actively participating in shaping cultural policies in the Middle East. He served as chairman of the Diriyah Biennale Foundation Advisory Committee and senior advisor at the Saudi Arabia Ministry of Culture and is currently working with the Royal Commission for Riyadh City.
