ABOUT PATTON MCDOWELL

I help nonprofit leaders and organizations build the leadership capacity required to thrive in moments of growth, transition, and complexity. As Senior Director of Leadership Initiatives at Armstrong McGuire, I lead and expand the firm’s leadership development strategy, designing and delivering cohort-based programs, executive learning experiences, and thought leadership that strengthen nonprofit leaders at every stage of their journey. My work focuses on helping individuals grow their influence while ensuring organizations have the leadership depth needed for long-term sustainability and impact, and I do it through our Mastermind Leadership Program, the Interim Management Institute, Leadership Gift School, and the Emerging Leaders in Philanthropy program. I have two decades of consulting experience in nonprofit leadership, strategic planning and philanthropy. Prior to joining Armstrong McGuire, I led PMA Nonprofit Leadership, where I partnered with more than 325 organizations, foundations, and institutions to support their leaders at all levels. I also serve as the Director of the Institute for Philanthropic Leadership, and that work now continues and scales within Armstrong McGuire’s comprehensive organizational capacity model.Earlier in my career, I spent a decade in higher education advancement, including five years as Vice President for University Advancement at Queens University of Charlotte and five years as Vice Chancellor for University Advancement at UNC Wilmington, where I was the youngest vice chancellor in the UNC system. Before that, I served with Special Olympics International in Washington, DC, and as Program Director for Special Olympics North Carolina, where I created volunteer training systems still used nationwide.Want to hear my thoughts on all things leadership?
