ABOUT NIGEL SMITH
Two decades experience working in digital transformation and content development in media and education sectors. I provide expert advice with a hands-on, can-do attitude. I’m able to inspire change through active engagement and listening to practitioners - understanding what they feel their challenges and opportunities are and opening their eyes to solutions they may not have considered. I’m an excellent communicator who gets things done in a professional, pragmatic and enthusiastic manner. From 2014 to 2020 I was the Director of Content at FutureLearn, the social learning platform with more than 15 million users around the world. I was part of the leadership team that drove the company’s strategic direction and growth which in 2019 resulted in £50m investment from the SEEK group in Australia, the largest edtech investment in Europe. I grew and led teams working with partner organisations and individual instructors to develop and deliver world-class online learning experiences. In addition to my expertise in online teaching and learning, I’ve had extensive experience engaging academic communities and managing stakeholders at all levels. Prior to FutureLearn I worked at the BBC for more than a decade, always at the intersection where broadcast met digital delivery. I was part of the launch team for BBC Four and later as Digital Editor at both BBC Radio 5 live and Radio 4 led the digital transformation strategies for those two stations. I am someone who’s always learning - often about seemingly random things. In 2012 I co-founded Tufnell Park Film Club and am a regular speaker at Nerd Nite London. I’ve walked around the perimeter of London twice as well as the entire length of the Thames.
