ABOUT NIGEL CRAWHALL
My current position focusses the mobilisation of indigenous and local knowledge systems in relation to climate, biodiversity and ecosystems. We specialise in transdisciplinary cooperation between indigenous peoples, local communities and scientists. We facilitate and work in partnership on dialogue between indigenous and local knowledge holders, scientists and policy makers. We host the IPBES Technical Support Unit on Indigenous and Local Knowledge and we are partnered with UNEP-WCMC and UNDP BES-Net on the National Ecosystems initiatives. Our Section used to be the UNESCO focal point on Smalls Island Developing States and we maintain active programme engagement on knowledge systems, particularly in the Caribbean and Pacific Regions. For twenty years, my work has been with indigenous peoples in Africa - concentrating on cultural heritage, human rights, environmental governance and climate justice issues. This work has included contributing to IUCN\'s mandate on climate, protected areas and World Heritage. In 2017, I moved from South Africa to France to be part of the Local and Indigenous Knowledge Systems (LINKS) programme in the UNESCO Sector for Natural Sciences. This takes my experiences in Africa to a global scale, helping bring indigenous and local knowledge more effectively into decision-making and achieving the SDGs. Senior management, fund raising, project planning and implementation; leadership; advocacy training; conflict resolution; ethnographic teaching and training. My academic qualifications are in sociolinguistics and political science.
