ABOUT NATHALIE BARACALDO
I am passionate about advancing Generative AI to make it safer, compliant and private, even under adversarial attacks. I have managerial and technical lead experience in a variety of projects with a track record of successfully delivering cutting edge solutions in time and managing diverse stakeholder priorities. My research has been published at top technical conferences and has been highlighted by multiple media outlets around the globe. I have more than 18 granted patents and +19 patent applications, and my work has received >7127 citations in Google scholar. Here are some of the projects I have worked on- I led the Safety Actionable Policy for Granite Language Models, synthetic data generation pipelines, red teaming scenario definition, PSIRT and red teaming result ingestion that were key components for the ISO 42001 certification- I was the Principal Investigator for the DARPA program “Guaranteeing AI Robustness Against Deception” (GARD). The Adversarial Robustness Toolbox is an open-source project that received the Linux Foundation AI & Data Foundation graduation distinction. The project lasted four years- I worked from inception in the IBM federated learning product which includes fully homomorphic encryption functionality. I led one of the core research teams that worked with the product to include this technology- I am frequently invited to give talks at top AI and Security venues. I am also invited to podcasts where Generative AI advances are discussed- I co-edited the book “Federated Learning: A Comprehensive Overview of Methods and Applications” Springer, 2022- In 2020, I received the IBM Master Inventor distinction for my contributions to the IBM intellectual property and innovation- I have received several recognitions at IBM including the 2021 Corporate Technical Recognition, one of the highest recognitions provided to IBMers for breakthrough technical achievements to the Trusted AI Initiative, which has led to notable market and industry success for IBM- I have received multiple best paper awards and published papers in top venues. Check my google scholar- I received my Ph.D. degree from the University of Pittsburgh, USA in 2016. My dissertation focused on preventing insider threats through the use of adaptive access control systems that integrate multiple sources of contextual information. Some of the topics that I have explored in the past include secure storage systems, privacy in online social networks, secure interoperability in distributed systems, risk management and trust evaluation.
