ABOUT MUGESH SANKARANARAYANAN

With over 15 years of experience in Chemical engineering and Biotechnology, I have had the privilege of working across various roles that bridge academia and industry. Currently, I serve as a Professor at Veltech Rangarajan Dr. Sagunthala R&D Institute of Science and Technology in Chennai, where I focus on teaching and research. My expertise lies in Metabolic engineering, Synthetic biology, and the biochemical production of sustainable materials.Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to work as a Research Scientist at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) in South Korea, and as an Assistant Professor at Vel Tech High Tech Engineering College. During my research career, I developed innovative bioprocesses for the production of 3-hydroxypropionic acid (3-HP) from renewable resources like glycerol and lignocellulosic biomass, which are crucial steps toward more sustainable chemical production.Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to secure funding for multiple research projects, including initiatives focused on biomass valorization and the detection of pesticidal residues in herbal drugs. My work has resulted in numerous publications in high-impact journals, as well as several patents related to the recombinant production of bio-based chemicals.I am passionate about solving complex biochemical challenges and have developed a diverse skill set that includes enzyme engineering, protein sciences, and bioinformatics. I believe that combining these skills enables me to contribute to advancements in fields like biopharmaceuticals and biomaterials. Mentoring students and researchers has always been a rewarding part of my journey, and I strive to inspire the next generation of scientists to push the boundaries of innovation.
