ABOUT MATT LATO
Dr. Lato is Principal Geotechnical Engineer and the Quality and Innovation Lead at BGC. He has worked on projects in North America, South America, Europe, Australia and Papua New Guinea. Matt’s focus is in the application of 3-dimensional remote sensing, specifically lidar and photogrammetry for change detection monitoring, stability assessments and geotechnical risk management. He has worked on various projects including landslide monitoring and management, tailings dam monitoring, geohazard risk management systems, natural hazard emergency response, dam and foundation monitoring, tunnel design, mining, and glacier monitoring in the high Andes. Matt is the lead author of the Site Investigation, Analysis, Monitoring and Treatment chapter of the Canadian Technical Guidelines and Best Practices related to Landslides, the recipient of the 2018 Canadian Geotechnical Colloquium Award, and an author or co-author of over 40 journal papers and over 150 conference papers. He has presented numerous keynote lectures, including at the IAEG/AEG conference, the North American Symposium on Landslides, the Canadian Geotechnical Conference, and the LARAM school in Italy. Dr. Lato is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Geological Sciences and Geological Engineering at Queen’s University, and an Affiliate Faculty Member in the Department of Geology and Geological Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines. He is currently involved in the supervision of Masters, Ph.D, and post-doctoral students. Dr. Lato acts as a peer reviewer for over 20 international journals in the field of natural hazards, engineering geology and rock mechanics.
