ABOUT MIRJA KAIZER AHMMED

Dr Mirja Kaizer Ahmmed is currently a Lecturer in the Department of Wine, Food and Molecular Biosciences at Lincoln University, New Zealand, where he contributes to teaching and research in the areas of food chemistry, lipidomics, and functional food development. He completed his PhD in Food Science at the University of Otago, where his thesis—titled “Investigation of Marine Omega-3 (n-3) Phospholipid from New Zealand Commercial Fish Co-products”—was recognized on the Division of Sciences Exceptional Thesis List (2022). His research focused on enhancing the extraction and quality of marine-derived n-3 phospholipids using pulsed electric field (PEF) and enzyme-assisted extraction (EAE) techniques. Notably, he developed a novel phospholipid extraction method known as ETHEX, which was published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. The outcomes of his doctoral work have been disseminated in nine peer-reviewed journal articles and one book chapter in leading food science publications.Prior to his doctoral studies, Dr Mirja completed a Bachelor of Science in Fisheries (2012) and a Master of Science in Fish Processing and Quality Control (2014) at Khulna University, Bangladesh—graduating top of his class in both degrees. He began his academic career at Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU) in 2015 as a Lecturer in the Department of Fishing and Post-Harvest Technology, and was promoted to Assistant Professor in 2017.Dr Mirja has extensive research and teaching experience in both Bangladesh and New Zealand, including roles at the University of Otago and Massey University. His expertise spans bioactive lipid extraction, omega-3 fatty acid encapsulation, phospholipid characterization, and the development of functional food prototypes. He has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles and has served as a guest editor for high-impact scientific journals. With a strong interdisciplinary background and a growing international research profile, Dr Mirja is committed to advancing innovation in marine co-product utilization and functional food science, while contributing to high-quality teaching and academic leadership at Lincoln University.
