Associate Professor Gillian Lawson was formerly the Head of the School of Landscape Architecture at Lincoln University in Christchurch, NZ and Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Design at QUT in Brisbane, Australia. She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and mentors early career academics in developing their teaching and supervisory capabilities. She has supervised numerous PhD candidates through to completion and has won awards for her contribution to higher degree completions. Her research interests focus on the sociology of education as well as the sociology of place-making and place custodianship, particularly in relation to waterfront communities. She has worked with universities, government agencies and commercial firms in China, Vietnam, USA, Scotland, Australia and New Zealand to plan, design and evaluate public spaces and promote safe and healthy environments for fair-go communities along water edges.
