ABOUT MICHAEL SIM
I am a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers in Scotland (FIES), Board Director at the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing, and former Operations and Technical Director with over nineteen years of experience in inspection and asset integrity across the energy, oil and gas, and industrial sectors. My career has focused on combining sound engineering judgement with strong governance, competence and commercial delivery. I have held senior leadership roles with responsibility for business performance, technical authority, accreditation and workforce competence across multi-site operations. This includes accountability for safe delivery, regulatory compliance and sustainable growth.I currently work at Subtera, where I combine commercial strategy with technical leadership to support the deployment of terahertz screening technology for asset integrity and CUI applications. My role involves taking new technology from development through structured field trials to safe and credible adoption by operators, both onshore and offshore. This work now extends into wider applications such as composite wraps, fire protection systems and complex riser sections.Alongside my industry role, I serve on the Board of the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing, contributing to national standards, certification frameworks and professional development across the inspection sector.A core part of my work has been developing engineers. I have supported NDT apprenticeships across the UK and Scotland, helped organisations invest in structured training, and assisted companies in achieving UKAS accreditation for ISO and IEC 17020. I have assessed more than sixty NDT apprentices from Level 2 through to Degree Level and also assess engineering surveyors against the national apprenticeship standard. As a former serving member of the Highlanders, I have spent the past decade supporting ex forces personnel transitioning into inspection and asset integrity roles. My background sits at the intersection of engineering, governance and delivery, supporting organisations to adopt new inspection approaches while maintaining competence, confidence and regulatory trust.
