ABOUT MICHAEL PORTER
I am supporting BGC\'s goal to organize the world’s geohazard and earth science data in ways that will allow industry and society to make proactive, risk-informed decisions that will save lives and money, and help protect the environment. I am a principal geological engineer with a diverse background in the applied earth sciences. My work focuses on geohazard risk management, which includes the identification, assessment, communication and management of hazards ranging from tsunami, volcanic eruption, fault rupture and soil liquefaction, to more frequent events including subsidence, landslides and river erosion. I have helped develop and implement geohazard risk management programs for resource development and transportation industries and government agencies in geologically active terrain throughout North and South America and Asia. These programs are evolving to make use of software tools that enable efficient data collection and management, systematic estimation of hazard and risk, and application of trigger action response plans linked to real-time monitoring of precipitation, stream flow, earthquakes and geotechnical instrumentation.
