ABOUT MICHAEL BEHRENDT

As a Distinguished Engineer / technical executive in the IBM Cloud Development organization, Michael is the worldwide Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for Serverless.In this capacity, he has the following responsibilities:⁃ Define the overall architecture for IBM’s serverless efforts, for compute and beyond⁃ Drive sustained differentiation, often in collaboration with IBM Research, e.g. ⁃ Drive “Serverless Quantum” in close collaboration with IBM’s quantum team - Drive serverless on the infrastructure and platform service level, and in domains like data processing, AI/ML and HPC⁃ Initiate, select and participate in open source efforts, e.g. ⁃⁃ Worked with Google, VMware, RedHat and others on defining knative and delivering it. Represented IBM on the Knative Steering Committee⁃⁃ Worked with IBM Research, Adobe, Red Hat, etc. towards making OpenWhisk an Apache project⁃ Deeply engaging with customers, analysts and partners⁃ Help building a world-class globally distributed engineering team and culture⁃ Identifying M&A targets to fill portfolio gapsHe combines- Very deep technical hands-on expertise- Very strong ability to create product architectures, backed by a deep understanding of the impact of architectural decisions on perf, scalability, availability, etc.) of the overall system - Very strong understanding of the market – competition, open source, client usage patterns, addressable market sizes, etc- Very deep understanding of the business side, including cost structures, cost modeling, impact of technical decisions on margins, …- Very deep understanding and experience of how to build highly robust and scalable globally distributed systemsBefore the current role, he held various senior technical leadership positions, e.g- He has provided technical leadership to a WW team of many 100\'s of engineers, spread across the US, Europe and Asia driving the development of the initial implementation for IBM’s cloud platform – for which he is one of the 5 ‘founding members’- Leading large, critical cloud-focused customer engagements, with many 100’s of millions of dollars of revenue- Drive “scale-out” of knowledge: He was the lead architect of the IBM Cloud Computing Reference Architecture, being the blueprint for all private, public and hybrid clouds IBM implements for customers and for itself. This has been used by of practitioners across the world, in projects up to a size of $4B.He has been working in the cloud computing space since 2003, starting with On Demand, Grid and Utility Computing, and he holds 37 patents.
