ABOUT MICHAEL BASS

I am a commercial mediator specialising in complex disputes, particularly those involving banking and financial services.Before moving into dispute resolution, I spent over thirty years in banking and financial markets, including senior roles within regulated global businesses. That experience allows me to engage quickly with both the technical detail and the commercial realities behind a dispute.I am typically appointed in high-value or technically complex matters where financial structure and decision-making are central — including financial services disputes, shareholder and partnership matters, professional negligence claims, and asset-heavy estate or trust conflicts.My background includes derivatives and other financial products, including disputes involving mis-selling and regulatory scrutiny. I am comfortable working with represented parties and with large volumes of documentation.My approach is calm, structured and commercially focused. I work with parties to distil complex issues to their essentials and to move beyond positional arguments toward realistic outcomes. Financial clarity is often central to that process.Alongside my mediation practice, I have developed expertise in international arbitration through the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators’ programme, further strengthening my work in complex commercial disputes.I also have experience of governance and board work in the charitable sector, and a strong interest in the continued development of professional standards within mediation and in maintaining confidence in private dispute resolution as a serious and rigorous discipline.
