ABOUT MATT SUMPTER

I\'m a senior litigation partner at Chapman Tripp, New Zealand’s leading law firm and specialise in competition law, intellectual property, commercial litigation, investigations and corporate criminal matters. I am recommended by Chambers Global as a leading New Zealand lawyer and authored New Zealand\'s principal antitrust textbook, New Zealand Competition Law and Policy.I am also a Director of Chapman Tripp Patents, a new service offering for the firm, launched in March 2021.Some of my recent experience includes- Acting for six major Hollywood studios securing ex parte civil search orders, asset freezing orders and interim injunctive relief that took down one of the world\'s largest online piracy operations- Appearing for ANZ Bank in successful Supreme Court litigation over the sale of financial derivatives- Advising Facebook on the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the attack on Christchurch Mosques- Acting for clients on financial market behaviour, cartel and trade practice investigations and prosecutions- Successfully defending clients such as global tobacco firm, Philip Morris, on criminal charges advanced at trial in the District Court- Acting as counsel to clients including LG Display, Allegion and Fisher & Paykel Healthcare on complex patent litigation in the High Court and Court of Appeal- Securing Commerce Commission approval for clients including Sky Television, NZME and Ingenico, among many others, on high-profile mergers and joint venture arrangements- Advising Allegion, a US global industrial company, successfully defending it in a long High Court trial of patent infringement allegations brought by Swedish multinational, Assa Abloy, I am also a member of the Legal Research Foundation Council and the competition law editor of the New Zealand Law Review. Before moving to full-time private practice, I taught various courses, including competition law, at undergraduate and post-graduate level at the University of Auckland’s School of Law for 12 years.
