ABOUT MATTHEW JEFFERY
I am a global conservation leader with more than 30 years of experience advancing large-scale restoration, biodiversity, and climate solutions. Currently, I serve as Chief Programs Officer at One Tree Planted, where I oversee a $30M+ annual portfolio of reforestation and climate-resilience programs spanning 60+ countries. In 2024 alone, our team restored over 41,900 hectares, planted 35.5 million trees, and delivered measurable outcomes for biodiversity, water security, and community livelihoods. In this role, I lead a globally distributed team of program experts across 14 countries, embedding accountability, equity, and transparency into every stage of our funding cycle. I designed and implemented One Tree Planted’s 2035 strategic framework, shifting from a scattershot tree-counting approach to a landscape-based model that drives deeper ecological and social impact. This includes targeted investments in biodiversity corridors, watershed restoration, urban forestry, and agroforestry systems that align with both global climate goals and local development priorities.I also direct the organization’s carbon-finance strategy, bridging philanthropic and market-based mechanisms. This includes developing accredited projects under Gold Standard and Verra, supporting corporate Scope 3 reporting, and piloting “soft carbon claims” for partners seeking measurable but non-accredited impact. Throughout my career—including 16 years at the National Audubon Society and executive leadership at the Perfect Earth Project—I have built and led cross-cultural teams, mobilized over $100 million in climate and conservation finance, and forged partnerships with governments, multilaterals, corporations, and local communities. My passion lies in scaling nature-based solutions that not only restore ecosystems but also strengthen resilience for people and the planet.
