In January 2018, Avena Foods Limited welcomed a new partner into the fold. Best Cooking Pulses, Inc, a family-owned agri-foods company that had been active in the international pulse trade since 1936, was looking to expand beyond its pulse offerings. Avena Foods Limited wanted to extend the crops grown under ‘Purity Protocol’ and to move beyond their farmer co-operative ownership. These pioneering Canadian companies were both committed to:• strong partnerships with farmers, • the milling of traceable, high quality, safe ingredients, • exemplary quality and food safety systems,• respectful relationships with customers and staff, and• sustainable environmental practices. These shared values are the foundation of the new Avena Foods Limited.

ABOUT MARGARET HUGHES
Passionate about the benefits of pulses and oats, both for people and for planet. Raised on the Canadian prairies where, since 1936, my family owned and operated Best Cooking Pulse Inc, a pulse-processing company supplying markets throughout the world. The Globe and Mail Report on Small Business Featured Best Cooking Pulses in ‘Food Inc. 10 companies that are changing the way we eat’. I have served on the boards of the Manitoba Food Processors Association, the Manitoba Food Development Centre, Field to Market Canada and on the Canadian Federal-provincial Pulse Industry Round Table, and spoken at numerous food industry events in North America. I have received the Manitoba Food Processors Association (MFPA) Industry Builder Award and the North American Agricultural Marketing Officials (NAAMO) Agricultural Marketing Excellence Award. In 2018, Best Cooking Pulses merged with Avena Foods Ltd. continuing the vision of ‘Partnering for Safe, Healthy Diets and a Sustainable World’.
