ABOUT LUIS CRUZ
As a first generation college student, I have been given the opportunity to attain new skills and experiences that have molded me into the person I am today. My early community involvement with Congressman Tony Cardenas, introduced me to the importance of effective communication practices. These practices set a path for me to excel in my volunteer work as well as my other areas of employment. Along side being a volunteer, I also had the chance to work for a small business for over five years. In this small construction business, I learned the importance of effective time management for a small team which was under my supervision. As now a team leader, I learned to use my communication skills to guide my team to optimal efficiency and a larger profiting margin for the business. This put me in a position in which I was able to appropriately manage my team with no restraints. While my skillset continued to grow, I was given the opportunity to become a federal employee for the Department of Commerce. This job allowed me to take charge of my responsibilities as an individual. Given the tools to do my descripted tasks, large work loads that were assigned to me were completed in a timely manner. My ability to manage time, manage myself and my work, and communication with the individuals I would speak to, allowed to me become one of the top employees. This opened doorways to more opportunities within the Department to grow. With new experiences paving my employment and educational path to success, I began to develop more attributes that are essential to my life. At Lowes, I was a seasonal associate with no notion of what was expected of me. Learning the business quickly and efficiently, I was promoted three months into the job as a Sales Specialist. As a sales specialist I was given a week to learn my business, train others, and help the company in totality. My ability to adapt and learn new things quickly made me become one of the highest performing Sales Specialist in the district. Directing my team, mentoring them to their own success, and changing with the different demands that I was faced with, I was able to use all of my skills to succeed in the business and create honest relationships with my clients. My work experiences have instilled a fortifying mindset of always wanting to adapt to change, not being afraid of stepping away from my comfort zone, and most importantly always making sure that my work ethic speaks for me in my success and my life as a whole.
