ABOUT LISA MAIONE
I am an Associate Professor of Graphic Design at the Kansas City Art Institute and the founder and creative director of For Instance, a design practice working across identity, publication, and experience design. My work sits at the intersection of design education, professional practice, and collaborative research. With 15+ years of experience in the design industry, I have collaborated with clients and partners across the arts, architecture, media, sciences, education, and the humanities. I am interested in how design operates at multiple scales—shaping visuals, spaces, tools, systems, and interactions that circulate ideas, support communities, and engage diverse audiences. In my academic role, I integrate professional practice with pedagogy, mentoring students through process-driven, socially engaged, and research-informed approaches to design. I am deeply committed to advancing access to design education and fostering inclusive, equitable learning environments through teaching, service, and leadership.Beyond the classroom, I actively contribute to the design community through board service, advisory roles, and national organizations. Across all of my work, I value collaboration, curiosity, and design as a critical cultural practice.
