The historic Café Tiergarten, a piece of Berlin history in the listed Schwedenhaus from Interbau 1957, is coming back to life with a vision that combines history and zeitgeist. More than just a place for coffee and cake: Readings, wine tastings, art talks and film evenings will enrich the neighbourhood, combined with locally brewed kombucha, outstanding coffee and simple, high quality dishes from organic produce from Berlin-Brandenburg.Apart from programming and organising the cultural events, I\'m also responsible for building the café\'s own art collection with works by Galli, Jack O\'Brien, Marcel Broodthaers, Gritli Faulhaber, Daniel Moldoveanu, Catharine MacTavish and more.

ABOUT LEONIE HERWEG

I am a curator and writer working at the intersection of contemporary art, architecture, and performance. My practice is shaped by a transdisciplinary and transnational background – from Cairo to Geneva, London to Berlin – with a focus on accessibility, context-responsive formats, and the politics of display. As founder of GROTTO, an independent art space in Berlin’s Hansaviertel, I curate exhibitions, public programs, and performative interventions that connect artistic production with social and spatial narratives. My academic foundation in International Relations (Université de Genève) and Curating Contemporary Art (Royal College of Art, London) informs a curatorial approach that is both concept-driven and grounded in pedagogy. I am particularly drawn to curatorial frameworks that engage with education and collective knowledge production. I have worked across institutional and independent settings – including the Goethe-Institut (Cairo), Museum MMK für Moderne Kunst (Frankfurt), Grisebach (Berlin), mumok (Vienna) and Galerie Mezzanin (Geneva) – and I regularly write for publications and exhibitions.
