ABOUT LEON VAN HEERDEN

I am a data specialist; senior strategy consultant and architect with more than 22 years’ experience leading organisations in defining and embedding their Chief Data Office (CDO) functions and capabilities, specifically in areas of data strategy and policy, data governance and compliance. My expertise covers all aspects of data and I scope, design and deliver creative solutions that address the business problems faced by senior stakeholders in financial services.Industries: Cross sector, concentrating on financial services.Platforms: Traditional (data warehouses) and modern data platforms (Open source,\"Big data\" including data lakes); Cognitive, Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). I work with data at rest and in motion and data held on traditional on-premises infrastructure and in the Cloud.I work across the full project lifecycle, from requirements gathering (often at the level of a detailed reading of the regulatory instrument) to ensuring a robust working solution adopted throughout the business. This includes business and data analysis, solution design, data modelling, data processing and the design of reporting solutions. I can deliver this using either a traditional or an agile approach. I manage all aspects of data from writing the Enterprise data strategy to defining and implementing the management policies and processes to (i) ensure that data quality is managed (ii) data privacy is maintained the requirements of GDPR are that data lineage, metadata and master data is proactively managed and (iv) educate users to ensure that data is used ethically.
