ABOUT LAUREN OLIVER
Whether it is to produce an assessment report or briefing as a Science Assessor or redesign a course as an Assistant Professor, I love looking at a problem, understanding the underlying concepts, discerning needs, synthesizing information from different sources, and clearly presenting solutions.I established and built my leadership, collaboration, project management, and communication skills as an Assistant Professor and as a Ph.D. student via developing and implementing interdisciplinary projects with internal and external team members, recruiting and supervising research students, managing a lab group, chairing several committees, and teaching multiple environmental and biology courses each semester. Then and now, I am excited to learn and connect topics across different fields, as well as improve processes to more efficiently solve problems and meet the needs of students, partners, and/or my organization. I strive to motivate those around me, build relationships, adapt to different circumstances, improve outcomes, and do what needs to be done to move things forward. I still use all of these skills today at U.S. EPA where I am: • Scoping and synthesizing information from partner engagements and scientific data to write white papers and reports on environmental and health impacts of microplastics, as well as assessment of built, natural, and social vulnerabilities to extreme climate events.• Building relationships and engaging with regional and state partners to increase the utility and effectiveness of assessments for capacity building and equitable climate adaptation, resilience, and mitigation activities.• Preparing and conducting briefings on several topics and projects for senior leadership, management, and external federal, state, NGO, and industry partners.
