WORK HISTORY
Chief Strategic Advisor @ITER Organization
St Paul lez Durance, FR
In this new role, I lead ITER\'s engagement with private sector fusion initiatives, an emerging and rapidly growing project. In practice, this means developing mechanisms to transfer ITER\'s accumulated knowledge and expertise - including lessons learned - to respond to private sector needs and support their rapid progress.ITER was always envisioned as a publicly funded project that would demonstrate the feasibility of fusion energy at scale, as a major step toward eventual fusion commercialization by the private sector. What was not anticipated at ITER\'s founding is the recent massive surge in private sector investment in fusion, and the emergence of many fusion start-ups globally. The result is an acceleration in sharing knowledge now - in parallel with ITER\'s own assembly and construction. Not all of these new initiatives will succeed. Some are building on the latest concepts. Others are resurrecting old ideas, based on new computing and manufacturing techniques that suggest new possibilities. But each such initiative will contribute to the global body of fusion R&D.It\'s not for ITER to judge these initiatives. We often disagree about the best approach, or the most realistic timeline. But we are aligned - remarkably so - on the engineering challenges that remain in order for fusion to realize its potential. And it\'s clear to all that we can go faster through engagement and cross-sector collaboration.I am incredibly fortunate to have this opportunity to build this new public-private bridge - as well as other duties I will retain at ITER. I continue to be inspired by this unique multinational collaboration. It continues to give me hope for a better future.

ABOUT LABAN COBLENTZ
I grew up in an Amish-Mennonite society skeptical of higher education and advanced technology. But my father – crippled by polio from the age of 10, unsuited for carpentry or work on the farm – became a self-taught researcher, educator, and “technologist” of sorts: a watch and clock repairman. His curiosity rubbed off on me. Well before I started school, I was reading, writing, and disassembling and reassembling pocket watches on the kitchen table. The same incessant three questions have driven me ever since, whether the challenge facing me was setting a pocket watch mainspring, controlling the innards of a nuclear submarine, streamlining a bureaucratic policy, unlocking the potential of a research university, promoting a cyber-privacy business concept, unraveling the riddle of U.S-Iran relations, or advocating global support to make hydrogen fusion a commercial reality: “What makes it tick?” “How can we make it work better?” and “How can we explain the answers to those who need to know?”I became fascinated by the power of curiosity, the power of innovation, and the power of narrative. All three are tools of creation: of creating the world we choose. This fascination has shaped my career path (if it can be called a path!) at the convergence of communication, advanced science and technology, and entrepreneurship.Specialties: Communications | Entrepreneurship | Strategic Foresight
