ABOUT KRISTIN PANGALLO
I am a scientist who is passionate about sharing science with a new generation. I seek to not only teach, but to inspire my students’ curiosity, critical thinking skills, and wonder at the natural world. I believe there is no task more important than increasing the scientific literacy of our society. And I firmly believe that it is the best way to change the world. My background is in environmental chemistry and toxicology, and my training includes a Ph.D. in Chemical Oceanography and a postdoctoral fellowship in toxicology. As my research interests and background are inherently interdisciplinary, I can teach across disciplines. In addition to my time as a chemistry professor, I have already developed and taught undergraduate courses in earth science and biochemistry. This includes short courses as well as full-length semester-long courses. My research focuses on naturally produced compounds that have chemical and physical properties that are similar to pollutants. By developing a more complete understanding of how the environment deals with these \'natural contaminants\' we can better understand the fate of pollutants that have already been released, and hopefully prevent problems with future industrial chemicals.Specialties: Analytical Chemistry, environmental organic chemistry, marine chemistry, radiocarbon, carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, developmental toxicology
