ABOUT KRISTIE NICOL
As a recent technical communication student at Simon Fraser University, I refined my communication and design skills. My career goal is to combine my artistic and technical passions with my love of information and data and my interest in equity to create content (text and visuals) that promotes accessible, and ethical science and health literacy. In particular, I\'m interested in UX research, visual communication, and plain language. I have over 10 years of experience in a range of science and GIS positions. Most recently, I explored science through the eyes of children and shared their excitement of discovery and inquiry with informal science programming. Just as challenging as a boardroom meeting or remediating a gas spill as an environmental scientist, I was forced to think fast on my feet and answer complex questions. My love of the questions \"why\" and \"how\" was equally matched by my students, constantly pushing me to wonder more.While working in customer service, I gravitated to engaging with customers through storytelling, capturing our collective excitement of being active outdoors. As an experienced patient educator and advocate, I am continuously honing my communication skills. I retell my narrative and involve my students in the process of learning about adapting, resilience, living with uncertainty, and chronic health conditions.These opportunities have allowed me to understand and appreciate the subtleties of language and visuals and their essential roles in communication and connection as never before.
