ABOUT KIMBERLY TOK

I am a driven professional with a chemical/process engineering background and 3 years of varied experience working in areas such as academic and applied research, process engineering, engineering support, business development, and operations and project management. Throughout my work experience, I have exemplified values of a self-directed, detail-oriented professional with a strong commitment to quality, and the tenacity to formulate ideas and execute projects. When I was a process engineer at NOV, I formulated standard design guidelines and workflow processes for NOV PFT Sand Handling Systems when such guidelines either did not exist or existed in a form that was ineffective for training new engineers. The guidelines I developed enabled engineers to work more efficiently and improved the quality of project documentation for NOV PFT Sand Handling Systems. I have always been interested in the application of engineering concepts to solve societal problems and create a sustainable society. Therefore, after working in the oil and gas industry for a few years (where I gained diverse and invaluable experiences), I pursued a MASc. in Chemical Engineering at the University of Toronto. I was also a part of the University of Toronto’s NSERC Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) for the BioZone program which is an interdisciplinary graduate program focusing on research on industrial biotechnology in the circular bioeconomy. My research focuses on the sustainable production of bioproducts and biofuels from renewable resources such as biomass. In my work, I use process models, techno-economic analyses, and life cycle assessments (LCA) to examine technologies for manufacturing bioproducts from biomass in the early stages of development to determine their economic feasibility and environmental impacts. The intended application of my research is to evaluate process bottlenecks, costly unit operations, and the environmental performance of unit processes that need to be improved to optimize the production of bioproducts from biomass.
