ABOUT KHONDOKER AKRAM

I am an expert molecular and cell biologist. My research interest is focused to understand the molecular basis of organ development, regeneration, infection & immunity, and diseases. To date, I have investigated mammalian lung development (Nat Com. 2019), lung immunity in viral infection (Mucosal Immunol. 2017), lung regeneration (Respir Res 2013), pulmonary fibrosis (Eur Respir J, 2013) and stem cell biology (Regen Med 2015) by utilising 3D in vitro and animal models. In the current £2.5M NIHR-funded project I conducted RNA-seq (Front. Cell Dev. Biol. 2022) and targeted qRT-PCR/ELISA (Front Mol Biosci. 2022) to elucidate pathomechanism of preterm birth. I am now conducting Shotgun metagenomic sequencing to reveal placental virome for the first time to determine if subclinical viral infection in placenta is linked with premature birth. I am certified in Human Tissue Act 2004 and Good Clinical Practice. I am trained on HO Animal Licence Module 1-4 with a PIL. Technical skills (Extensive level):1. Mammalian cell culture (Human and rodent Primary cells and cell lines)2. 3D In vitro modelling & Co-culture3. Precision-cut ex vivo tissue slice modelling4. 3D ALI culture5. 2D/3D Live-cell imaging (Zeiss and Incucyte)6. hESC & hMSC culture7. Super-resolution Confocal microscopy (STORM & Airyscan)8. Wide-field fluorescence microscopy 9. RNA-seq & Shotgun Metagenomic sequencing10. qRT-PCR, qPCR11. ELISA12. SDS-PAGE & Western blot13. Paraffin sectioning and IHC (F) & Fluorescence Immunocytochemistry14. Organoid culture15. Mouse husbandry and dissection16. Human placenta processing17. Influenza virus infection assays18. Lentivirus generation and transduction19. GraphPad PRISM, MS Excel,20. Image processing and Analysis: Fiji (ImageJ), Imaris 3D image reconstruction, Huygens Deconvolution software21. Galaxy platform (Bioinformatics)
