ABOUT KATE SIMON

Dr. Simon is an Assistant Professor in Residence in the Department of Pediatrics, School of Medicine, UC Irvine and Assistant Director of Research in Pediatric Sleep at Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC). She is a licensed pediatric psychologist, with expertise in behavioral sleep medicine across the lifespan. Her primary research program investigates the role of sleep in cognition and mental health across development in healthy and patient pediatric populations, memory formation and alteration, and developing targeted sleep-based interventions to enhance mental health symptoms and cognition. Dr. Simon has extensive remote and in-lab research set ups using wearable technology, electroencephalography, gamified cognitive tasks, and custom built app. She evaluates day-to-day and longitudinal changes in sleeping brain rhythms, mood symptoms, and cognition. Dr. Simon consults on promoting healthy sleep practices in school and work place settings, integrating behavioral sleep medicine into technology, industry-based research and experimental design, validating sleep-based technology, and supports opportunities to embed new technology within research and mental health domains.
