Kara is an award-winning journalist, social media strategist, and speaker who has reported on a range of issues including how Winter Storm Uri exposed an aging energy grid unprepared for a changing climate, how additional logging of the Tongass National Forest will impact Alaska Native communities, as well as a series of in-depth interviews with the organizers of the viral online movement Black Birders Week. For her contributions to public media, she received the 2021 Rising Star Award presented by Jackson Wild. Her work has been published by NOVA on PBS, NATURE on PBS, National Geographic, and other top science media publications. She has worked on projects for GBH Catalyst, NOVA Science Studio, TED, PublicsLab at The Graduate Center, City University of New York. She served on the board of GBH Catalyst from 20••••23 and advanced communications and strategy goals. She is an active member of the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA).Prior to her editorial career, she worked as a shark research assistant for Bimini Shark Lab, collecting biological samples from different shark species in The Bahamas. This field experience exposed her to shark conservation efforts, and gave her the ability to contribute to a natural history program on the critically endangered great hammerhead shark. Kara holds a BA in journalism and a B.Sc in environmental studies from New York University.
