ABOUT JOSH MCELROY
I never knew what I wanted to be when I grew up, my kids tell me that I still haven’t grown up, but I have decided through my career progression that I now know what I want to be. As a Class A delivery driver, I enjoyed and had the skills needed self-starter, self-paced, physical stamina, safe, customer focused, and I possessed the attention to detail needed to excel at the position. About 10 years ago I was asked if I had ever thought about applying for management after being a trainer for new associates for 3 years. I thought I had found what I wanted to be when I grew up already when I became a delivery driver, I started as a helper and worked on the job to get my CDL, and I was content. Once I decided to join the management team is when my life got interesting. I was excited about my work again; it wasn’t just going to work anymore; it was a challenge. I was taking classes and learning daily again and embracing the change. Over the next several years I was able to be around some great leaders who taught me wonderful skills that helped me grow into the leader that I have become. I had finally found what I wanted to be when I grew up, a people leader. With this you have some situation where you may need to navigate emotional situations with a person, yes, a person not a number or an associate. I’ve been told that I have a calming manner in these situations and can resolve the conflict and find a solution once the emotional part has been worked through. Some associate would avoid me because of this ability, they would come in upset about their day, and I would stop them to ask what was wrong, they would explain they didn’t want to talk to me about it because they wanted to stay mad a little longer, usually already with a smile at that point, to each their own. I enjoyed training new associates, and I transitioned that into building my management teams. I have been graced with great people around me who have been very skilled and quick to learn and show the rest of the team, occasionally I get to show them something too. Watching some of the people you have helped train move on because of a promotion is a fulfilling gift. Getting people to understand that we truly do win as a team has been one of my happiest moments time and time again. Many things in life will drive you crazy if you let it so I always tell my team you have 2 choices, laugh or go crazy pick 1, and I choose to laugh.
