ABOUT JENNY SMITH

UK and European patent attorney at Murgitroyd. Involved with our medical devices, engineering and biotech teams and have experience prosecuting patent applications for a variety of mechanical and medical devices in the UK and Europe. I have experience working with patent families covering Japan, China, South Korea, Russia, the US, Canada and Australia. Involved with the filing and prosecution of registered design applications. Background in biology, having studied Microbiology for my undergraduate degree and used biological technology throughout my postgraduate research. A research project to investigate the immune response to artificial hip replacements sparked my interest in medical devices, which led me to study Medical and Biological Engineering for my postgraduate studies. My MSc included taught modules in engineering and focussed on the study and design of medical devices and tissue engineering. My PhD was a multidisciplinary project at the Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering at Leeds University which used collagen gels to model spinal cord injuries in response to high velocity impacts. I was lucky to experience the University’s close links with industry which included lab placements and visits, including external supervision and collaboration with University College London. I hope to further develop my specialism in medical device technology during my career as a patent attorney.
