Integration between chemical and mechanical recycling flowsheets and removal of electrolyte from the black mass (BkM)Responsibilities:• Accountable for understanding, sharing, and ensuring the team comply with regulatory affairs and required EHS when taking delivery of BkM or transferring it between sites.• Research and flowsheet development focused on removal and recovery of LIB electrolytes, binder and graphite using knowledge of both mechanical and chemical recycling flowsheets.• Identify analytical methods for characterising components in BkM, how these change over time or with processing.• Collaboration with external partners and stakeholders, planning experimental framework including timescale and managing expectations • Driving use of LCA at research stages, improve sustainability, and reducing developmental time • Management of Innovate UK Projects, including Project Manager for consortium, leading technical sections of the projects, forming future collaborations • Team management, objective setting, supporting individuals’ progression and development Achievements:• Building, co-ordinating, leading a team with relevant skills to understand and develop methods for extraction of fluorine, investigating alternative removal processes, identifying critical pathways, and designing work packages, supporting development of a BkM database to include its characterisation.• Collaborating with commercial partners to develop innovative solutions to address need for flowsheet integration, fluorine safety considerations and creating increased value. • Delivery of reports to commercial partners characterising BkM, showing preferred composition integration to chemical recycling flowsheet, presenting technical data to non-technical partners enabling key integration discussions.• Development/delivery of a process model for chemical recycling of lithium-ion batteries key to understanding how individual extraction processes link together and what the feed will be.
