Chief Sustainability Officer of a Chemical Company: A responsibility, no hypocrisy I started in the administration enforcing environmental laws. The United Nations had just launched the Global Compact and I had to engage industries on Sustainability. I was frustrated by a few chemical companies, struggling to comply with regulation and reluctant to progress. Later, I bumped into a company whose Leaders and Shareholders had understood that sustainability was not only a challenge, but also an opportunity for the Chemical Industry because chemicals would be part of the solution. This is when I joined Solvay, a Chemical company with strong values, deeply committed to science and progress, which put sustainability at the core of its strategy. The transformation of our legacy is a challenge from a technological and an economic standpoint. We need creativity and determination to make it happen. But it will pay off.
