UKAD’s Innovation Commission was established in 2019 with the purpose of harnessing expertise, diverse perspectives, and insight from within the UK’s private and public-sector science industries to safeguard the UK’s position at the forefront of international efforts to prevent doping, and inform, educate and empower all those involved in sport and anti-doping. The Commission is tasked with advising on horizon-scanning activities, identifying transferable technology from other sectors, facilitating collaborations with external industry contacts, and supporting the development of an innovative culture across UKAD.

ABOUT JAMIE P.
My background and expertise is in exercise physiology, training science, adaptation, and ergonomic optimisation in sport – particularly cycling performance, equipment, and race tactics. Now an academic at the University of Birmingham, my career spans two decades with senior leadership roles in British World-Class sport, in technical directorship and business development, and serving on national and governmental advisory boards. Through Vorteq Sports, I\'ve had the privilege of supporting WorldTour cycling teams, national federations, and hundreds of elite and amateur cyclists, contributing to success at Olympic, Paralympic, World, and Commonwealth Games, as well as World and National records. Recent highlights include supporting over a dozen Olympic medalists at Paris 2024, over 50 world titles, the current Women’s Olympic, World, and Commonwealth Time Trial Champion, both Men’s and Women’s Olympic Team Pursuit Champions, the men’s and women’s IRONMAN World Champion, and stage and overall victories in all three of cycling’s ‘Grand Tours’.My career as an applied sport scientist largely focused on the British world-class sport sector, including Head of Science for British Athletics and Lead Physiologist for the English Institute of Sport (EIS). I have worked across three Olympic cycles providing physiological support to a number of medal-winning national governing body programs, along with research and innovation, and professional development responsibilities. Most recently, I was involved in the creation of the Boardman Performance Centre - a commercial sports science, engineering and medicine facility working with all levels of cycling performance - and now leading a similar venture with Vorteq Sports. As a coach, I have 20 years of experience in advising cyclists and other endurance athletes and has coached riders to over 80 national titles and multiple British records. Now an academic in my day job, I joined the University of Birmingham in 2022, taking a role as Associate Professor in Applied Physiology and Leadership in Sport. Through my time in industry, I maintained an active research and reviewing profile in collaboration with various universities, and most recently as a member of the UKRI REF2021 review panel (SP24). My PhD is from Manchester Metropolitan University, in Exercise Physiology, examining cardio-respiratory and muscle metabolism aspects of high intensity exercise.
