ABOUT JAMES PHILLIPS
33 years in the RAF, initially as an apprentice technician then via a cadetship to university and commission as an engineering officer. Many tours and high spots including: building VIP transport for Mrs Thatcher and the Queen; maintenance officer for Sentry; heading countermeasures development at a time our aircraft were threatened; designing cockpits for the USAF; setting up 42 Expeditionary Support Wing; OC Eng & Logs at an overseas airbase; bringing the Atlas into service and finally dealing with airworthiness of all UK aircraft. After the RAF I worked as a systems engineer, developing naval mine countermeasures and harbour infrastructure. I then moved on to consulting into the MOD for design of procurement competitions.I have most recently returned to engineering, aviation and airworthiness by joining MBDA.Along the way I picked up a bachelors and MSc in electronics. For interest I also captured an MSc in architecture, specifically Advanced Environmental Energy Systems with the Centre for Alternative Technology and I volunteer with a local energy group, giving advice to the fuel poor.
