Chartered engineer with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and a Global Commercial Manager at John Crane. I first joined John Crane as a Reliability Engineer before moving into the commercial team. Throughout my time at John Crane, I have specialised in dry gas seals (DGS) – combining a strong knowledge of the DGS market with a deep understanding of DGS technology to provide comprehensive client support and develop new business opportunities. DGS are critical, precision-engineered components used in rotating equipment such as centrifugal gas compressors. Centrifugal gas compressors are used in various applications including gas storage, transportation, injection, and refrigeration. They are commonly used in oil & gas and chemical industries and are rapidly growing in energy transition technologies such as hydrogen and CCUS (carbon capture, utilisation, and storage). A fundamental challenge of pressurised rotating turbomachinery such as centrifugal gas compressors is preventing excessive gas leakage through the gap between the rotating and non-rotating components of the machine. This leakage has environmental, safety, and economic implications. This is where DGS come in. Using spiral groove technology, DGS generate a very thin gap between the rotating and non-rotating components of the machine. Despite these turbomachines being the size of a bus, running continuously for years at a time, rotating at of RPM, operating at high temperatures and at pressures of 100’s of atmospheres, the DGS can reliably maintain a gap between the rotating and non-rotating components of only a few microns (µm) – smaller than a human hair! This keeps gas leakage to a minimum. By maintaining this gap between the components, issues such as wear and heat generation can be avoided, allowing for more reliable operation. With seven years of experience in the DGS market, I work with clients all over the world in challenging environments to deliver successful and cost-effective solutions.
