ABOUT IAN RUSSON
Growing up in Middlesbrough apart from supporting the BORO (the local football team), my roots in the steel and chemical industries shaped my career path, following in the footsteps of my father and grandfather, both skilled craftsmen at British Steel. After earning my degree in Chemistry from Newcastle University, I joined British Steel’s graduate program, igniting my passion first for environmental stewardship and then health and safety - as everyone has the right to go home safe and healthy, every day. With extensive experience in senior roles across Europe, I’ve worked in both single and multiple high-hazard sites and corporate-level operations, reporting directly to the CEO. My leadership journey has involved everything from small teams to large, complex organisations, driving change and fostering a culture of safety. Throughout my career within the global steel industry, I’ve been fortunate to lead and be part of numerous transformative initiatives such as - developing the first certified environmental management system in the business; receiving recognition and awards for business commitment to the environment; achieving CEO award for carbon neutrality; earning a World Steel award for zero harm logistics. My commitment to digitising HSE reporting and investigation, developing interventions and implementing effective governance structures has significantly improved safety performance and engagement across the organisation. I am proud to have changed the conversation on health and wellbeing. I prioritise creating a proactive safety culture, focusing on the presence, rather than the absence of safety by fostering effective communication and engagement at all levels, and deployment of systems and processes with the aim of managing risks, reducing injuries and high potential events. I am passionate about visiting sites, conducting lead safe tours, and engaging with employees, as I believe that collaboration is key to cultivating a robust safety culture. Having navigated the challenges of the industry, including managing investigations into serious incidents, I bring resilience, experience and a steadfast commitment to health and safety. My career has been deeply rewarding, shaped by continuous growth and learning, however one thing hasn’t changed - I still support the Boro!External Committees: Member of IOSH High Hazard Industries Community PreviouslyNon-Executive Director of the IEMA and member of the board committeeMember of World Steel Health and Safety Leadership GroupMember of the Health and Safety Conference Board
