ABOUT HASSAN AZAD

I am a passionate and driven software developer, with a background in chemical engineering and professional cricket. My main strengths are my curiosity, love for collaborative working, and growth mindset. Having established strong coding fundamentals through an intensive Makers Academy bootcamp and honed my skills with Django and REST APIs in an Agile team at Onyx Insight, I am excited to take on new challenges. At Onyx, I wrote API adapters to perform Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) operations (in Python) for integrating client data onto the company\'s product, executed on an AWS Lambda schedule. I learnt to utilise Jira, CI pipelines and Gitflow to collaborate with colleagues, welcoming code reviews as an opportunity to improve my practice. Additionally, analysing the existing codebase encouraged me to think about code from an architectural perspective. I delivered a functional MVP within a stretch deadline including extensive unit tests and end-to-end testing, receiving excellent feedback for the ability to pick up new concepts at pace. I learnt to code in C and became proficient in memory management within a few weeks of enrolling on CS50, a Harvard X course. To aid my growth, I secured a project with Contrast, a printing business, to design an app for invoicing and inventory control. I responded to the client’s needs within agreed timeframes, for example, ensuring the app would meet accessibility requirements. I continue to collaborate with the client to troubleshoot, ensuring updates are implemented securely using Git for version control. Managing this project independently allowed me to gain familiarity with the software development lifecycle from requirement analysis through to testing and deployment, including using Docker to containerise the project. In cricket, even scoring one run relies on clear communication and mutual trust between teammates to signal when it is safe to leave the crease. I learnt to apply these principles in a new context at bootcamp with Makers Academy. Collaboration skills were crucial for our final project, involving five developers working on the same codebase to deliver a short-term rental platform. We organised ourselves by breaking down tasks into Agile Sprints, with daily stand-ups and retros to keep us on track, alongside CI/CD processes. Being largely self-taught, I am accustomed to learning on the job and at pace. I also appreciate the importance of having structures in place to keep projects on schedule and welcome the opportunity to work collaboratively, learning from others while helping my peers.
