ABOUT GOWTHAMI ROOKA
I have 10+ years of experience in process engineering and industrial decarbonization, currently working within Heidelberg Materials’ global Carbon Capture and Industrial Decarbonization program, based in Germany. My experience includes full-scale cement CCS projects such as Brevik (Norway)- the world’s first commercial-scale carbon capture plant on a cement kiln - and Padeswood (UK), as well as EU Innovation Fund–supported initiatives including Rezzato (Italy) Anrav (Bulgaria) and ANTHEMIS (Belgium).In addition to technical execution, I have been actively involved in supporting successful EU Innovation Fund applications, including technology definition, CAPEX/OPEX estimation, risk articulation, and alignment with EU decarbonization and funding criteria. My work spans capture technology selection (amine-based post-combustion systems, advanced solvent concepts, oxyfuel and oxy-calcium approaches), CO₂ compression and conditioning, kiln integration, and techno-economic evaluation. A key part of my role involves evaluating CCS configurations against energy cost, carbon price trajectory, and CO₂ certificate economics to support robust long-term investment decisions. Prior to my current focus on cement decarbonization, I spent several years in oil and gas process engineering and project execution, working with Wood, Shell, and Aibel / NOV (Norway) across EPC and operator environments. In Norway, I worked on projects such as Munin, one of the world’s first normally unmanned offshore production concepts, where reliability, automation, and risk-based design were critical. This background has strongly shaped my approach to CCS and industrial decarbonization - particularly around operability, availability, integration risk, and lifecycle cost, which often become decisive at industrial scale. I am particularly interested in how lessons from European CCS deployment can inform pragmatic, cost-aware decarbonization pathways in other regions.
